Victoria - Rosh HaShanah & The Big Brother 16 Finale
When I first heard the Big Brother 16 finale date was September 24th, I was thrilled, just to know what the date was. It wasn't until the following day that it hit me: September 24th is the 1st night of Rosh HaShanah! If you're not familiar with the holiday, the quote on the right does a beautiful job of explaining..
After a bit of thinking about how I was personally going to manage this, I remembered Victoria.. and her family... so I did a little research, and I discovered that there is a place for them to go to services that's less than 1/4 mile walk from the where the BB House is located. When I visited that synagogue's website, it got even better. They are holding ALL of their High Holiday Services ON the CBS lot, precisely where the BB house is located.
OK.. This is good. This is very good.
So then I checked to see what time Rosh HaShanah actually starts in Studio City..
Mmm.. less good. It coincides directly with the start time of the finale, which is set to air live at 9:30pm on the east coast. Same goes for services on Wednesday night...
OK.. So here is my great hope. I hope that someone sees this and makes arrangements for Victoria and the whole Rafaeli family to attend ALL of these services... and makes arrangements for them to be in a hotel within easy walking distance, as I believe none of them will be driving until later Saturday night or even Sunday, since Rosh HaShanah flows right into Shabbat this year.

I thought of this the other day when Victoria was sitting in the backyard with Derrick and she promised her, I think it was grandma, that she would be home for Rosh Hashanah. She told Derrick that she would be flying back home on September 23rd... No matter what.
I reacted to it, knowing she is making Jury and the date conflicted. I really think she is required to be at the taping on the finale... because they sign all the forms when the season starts.
I hope it works out somehow.

Caro, has there been any other evidence of production's religious support? She's not the only person of Judaic faith in the house this season right? I'm wondering if they're been providing Kosher foods, the Torah... Seems only fair if there are copies of the bible.
Jewish Holidays have been observed in the house (season 8 and 12 come to mind) and I do hope CBS will assist the family with arrangements (if the are observant) because it would be awful for her to have no one there to greet her when she got out of sequester/house. I will say I'm not sure how religious she is as she has been seen eating a cheeseburger (being kosher means only eating kosher meat which BB did not provide and not mixing milk and meat) and she is eating slop which is not kosher.
As far as the Torah yes a chumash (printed version of the Torah) has been brought in and a siddur has been allowed (contains the prayers said). She would have had to have brought her own and it doesn't appear she has since she has been reading Jocasta's bible but never the chumash.
I will not be watching the show myself that night but will watch online or on the dvr after the holiday is over.
Hi ceemurph- I have often thought the same thing- why is there not a copy of the Torah available if there is a bible available for the HGs?
Also, not to completely knock AGP, but someone should have looked at the calendar and planned the summer schedule a little better so as to not conflict with a High Holiday for those of the Jewish Faith. This is just my opinion...because they would never have planned a finale around a very important Christian Holiday. Just saying....
I think... Thems the breaks. Everyone has their own responsibility to manage what role religion plays in their lives. Whenthe time comes, Victoria and her family will make the best decision for themselves
FYI -- Per Hidden Gold, who is having blogger issues..
I saw it on BBAD. She said it was her first cheeseburger. But she was eating a Veggie burger with cheese. And said she'd never had that...
Before because at home, she'd just have the real thing—meat. So she called it her first cheeseburger but it wasn't actually one
oh man I had no idea, so no meat toppings on pizza, I don't think I could live with that.
I, personally, don't think it's BB's responsibility to do anything special because of the Holiday.
It's my understanding the houseguests are fully aware that they have signed up for this game, giving up special events, holidays etc that may happen during their stay.
They should call her in though and explain the game MAY go on during the holiday and let her make the decision of what she'd like to do in the event that happens.
My big shock is her family allowed her to do this.
If I understand correctly, the finale was supposed to be on Sept 18, which is why Victoria went in, knowing she'll be out by Rosh Hashana. When Andrew Gordon was on the show in BB12, he wouldve had the same problem - even worse, the finale was *after* Rosh HaShana, so he wouldve had to somehow go to services from the jury house.
as far as I know, Andrew was the only religious Jew on BB to date, keeping kosher and all that - he didnt even eat the slop. Eric Stein BB8 was also somewhat religious but I dont think he kept kosher either.
Victoria comes from a pretty religious family though so I'm surprised she's so laid back about it.
I am local to the area where BB and CBS is located and I am fairly certain that there are no hotels at all within reasonable walking distance to the studio. And the show starts filming at sundown, so I don't know how there is going to be any accommodation for the family and Victoria during that specific time. It does seem strange scheduling, as I would imagine many of the executives and staff members are also observing the holiday.
I may have a brain fart here, but isn't Alison Grodner Jewish? Although shes probably less religious than Victoria.
